Curriculum

At CNS it is our job to give the children the guidance, tools, and encouragement they need to prepare for their future–and, of course, to have a wonderful time in the present.

We create age–appropriate classroom learning environments based on the fundamental premise that children are active learners. Our curriculum plans are designed around interest themes and presented through a variety of indoor as well as outdoor activities.

We emphasize basic cognitive skills and problem-solving activities, helping children apply what they learn to their own life experiences. Helping a child relate information to new situations promotes higher level thinking skills. These skills are the building blocks of independent learning.

We encourage the children to be considerate of the needs, feelings and interests of their friends, teachers, parents and siblings. We encourage the children to find creative and successful ways to solve problems and to express their feelings.

We provide an enriching, accepting atmosphere for the children. Our goal is to build strong feelings of self-esteem. This is a valuable life skill that will carry the child well beyond his years of formal education.

We offer a variety of schedules, either full or part time, both a.m. and p.m., M-F, MWF or T/Th. The school day is from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

History

Few institutions of education can match the history and success of the Christian Nursery School at First Christian Church of North Hollywood. Founded in 1950, CNS has launched several generations of children with the academic and spiritual foundations to succeed. Learning doesn’t end with a diploma. The greatest gift we can give our children is a lifelong thirst for learning. That’s our goal.

CNS supports unparalleled academic and developmental preparations with the quiet presence of a nurturing, inclusive spiritual environment, respecting all faiths. First Christian Church of North Hollywood and it’s senior pastor Robert M. Bock have been deeply involved in the community, in education (Rev. Bock spent 16 years on the LA County School Board) and in various ecumenical partnerships (e.g. the Interfaith Food Pantry, operated jointly by 17 Christian and Jewish congregations in the San Fernando Valley) since the church was formed in 1924.

Founded by concerned parents who couldn’t find a pre-school that met their expectations, CNS has built a tradition of staying current with the latest innovations while maintaining the proven methods that built it’s well deserved reputation. Enrollment offices at Laurel Hall, Campbell Hall, Wesley, and Buckley, as well as LAUSD annually embrace CNS graduates.

The highest praise is the number of former students who return as parents, seeking the same nurturing environment they experienced. And it’s still here! “Opening young hearts and minds since 1950.”

Parents

We provide numerous opportunities for parent participation as we respect the fact that families are partners in their child’s social and educational experiences.

We celebrate cultural diversity and welcome families to share special traditions and holiday celebrations. On any given day you may find a parent working in one of our classrooms, reading a story, presenting an activity or helping with a party.

Parents can volunteer to be Room Parents, meeting once-a-month, to plan and implement social events and fundraisers. Sign-up sheets are posted before school activities for families to volunteer their time and talents.

Mission

It is the mission of Christian Nursery School to provide a safe and nurturing environment for children 2 through 5 years of age. Children are encouraged to grow and learn at their own rate through developmental, hands-on activities. A child’s play is believed to be the foundation for meaningful, early learning experiences. Our mission comes to light through the joint efforts of First Christian Church, our CNS Council, a strong parent partnership and the dedication of our Christian Nursery School Staff.

Our Philosophy… We believe that all children deserve love, guidance and respect for their individuality. We believe that children learn and grow to their fullest potential in an environment that supports their spiritual, physical, social, emotional and cognitive development. We believe that children learn about themselves and the world around them through meaningful interactive experiences. Our classrooms as well as outdoor areas are child-oriented and designed to encourage exploration and discovery.

Our Goals… We strive to give children a rich knowledge base while encouraging language and listening skills, developing self-help skills, promoting positive interactions, and a healthy self-image. CNS children will find here a safe place to express their thoughts and feelings, use their creativity and imaginations and begin a life-long love of learning.

Staff

There’s no substitute for a committed, experienced, well-trained staff. These are the people you entrust your precious children to… the people who partner with you to create a bright future for that bundle of joy.

CNS operates from the belief that all children deserve love, guidance and respect for their individuality. Our state licensed staff members are all experienced professionals in Early Childhood Education, dedicated to creation classrooms that foster a child’s natural curiosity through exploration and discovery.

CNS teachers are all credentialed and continue to seek enrichment education every year. They attend in-service meetings to widen their skills and they keep abreast of the latest developments in early childhood training. Additionally, some CNS staff members are active in state and local professional advocacy groups to ensure the best for pre-school children. Key staff members are CPR and first aid trained. Every staff member is capable of conducting emergency procedures and can handle any unusual circumstance that might arise.

Our teachers, as facilitators of our program, plan and implement curriculum and activities for the specific ages and interests of the children in their care. Values of kindness and good citizenship are modeled by a caring staff and emphasized at a weekly Chapel Time.

Miriam Mancilla, CNS Director

I have worked as an educator for 17 years.  I began my career working for the Montebello School District as a teacher assistant and then as a substitute teacher. When I moved to the San Fernando Valley, I started working for a Los Angeles Unified School District middle school as the assistant in their bilingual program.  Working with middle school children and helping them learn English was gratifying.  It felt like I was paying it forward for what other teachers had done for me.  Soon I realized my passion was working with young children.  I continued my education and, while attending Pierce College, one of my professors liked my work and gave me an opportunity to work at his preschool. I worked there as a teacher for 12 years before coming to Christian Nursery School.

Miriam’s Philosophy

I was born in Mexico and moved to Los Angeles when I was 12 years old.  This transition made me value life and become appreciative of the opportunities given to me.  Being part of the Christian Nursery School family is a great opportunity and I’m excited and ready to take this new journey.

My passion for becoming a teacher was thanks to one of my middle school teachers.  The passion and connections he built with his students made an impact in our lives.  During my career I have learned that making connections with students creates paths for trust, understanding, freedom and expectations.

Building connections with families is how this opportunity came to me.  As I step into my new role as Acting Director, I am so happy to be a part of the CNS family.
